Our June eco retreat program in the ethereal mountains and forests of Monteverde, Costa Rica. We are deeply honored that Shayá, Bainawá, and Maiko Txana Kupi Huni Kuin (the “True People”) of the Pinuya Village near the border of Brazil and Peru shared community with us for the last two days of our trip. We are deeply grateful for them, their wisdom, and their joyous message of healing. They are pictured in the back row right, along with their representative and translator Marcos Vinicius (Vinny) Romão of Associação Povos da Terra. We were deeply honored that Abuelo Carlos Huizton and Paula Colandí joined us one evening and morning at Finca Camino Nuevo in Monteverde for story sharing along with a land and peoples honoring ceremony. Carlos is an elder of the Huetares people and a leader in the creation of the nine medicine circles of Costa Rica. The Huetares were until colonialism the most powerful and organized tribal nation in what is now Costa Rica. A central part of our mission is to do what we can to develop kinship relations of mutual trust to raise awareness of folks' lived experiences and support them.
